There’s never a dull moment when you’re photographing a family with three boys. Add a dog called Scruffy to the mix, and you know you’re in for an entertaining morning!

Kerryn and Manoli joined me at Kangaroo Point Cliffs in Brisbane with their three boys, aged 11, 13 and 16, and the family’s four-legged companion.

With their eldest just a year away from finishing school, they wanted to capture this chapter before everyone gets a little older and life changes again.

They’d had family photographs taken over the years, but this time wanted something different: an outdoor setting, beautiful portraits, natural unscripted moments and, of course, a few photographs with Scruffy.

The Brisbane River provided a stunning backdrop, with the city skyline and leafy riverside walkways offering different places to explore.

We started with the boys and Scruffy overlooking the city. There was plenty of banter as everyone found their place, and it didn’t take long for the family’s personalities to come through.

One of the boys spotted a fallen tree nestled between two others, creating a natural frame for a family portrait. Sometimes the best photography locations are the ones you discover together.

We also took time for individual photographs of the boys with their mum, finding a few quieter moments among the fun.

Two images stand out to me: the whole family sitting together with Scruffy and the skyline behind them, and everyone simply walking along the riverside path, chatting together.

Nothing elaborate. No need to look at the camera. Just a family enjoying being together.

With the eldest approaching the end of his school years, those ordinary moments will become even more special with time.
